First Committee on Disarmament and International Security

Active involvement and cooperation are essential for bringing about a better tomorrow. No one is unaffected by the events occurring in the world today – we are all interconnected, and we are all interdependent upon one another to create a better world.

By taking part in UNISCA, each one of us has taken the important step of working towards a solution for the myriad challenges our world faces today. Our actions can serve as a positive force and as an instrument of change to make our world a better place.

The issues presented to the First Committee are of especially critical importance to long-term global stability. Topics on the agenda include nuclear nonproliferation, weapons of mass destruction, international terrorism and information security.

Nuclear weapons are a dangerous threat to peace and stability. With the destabilization brought about by the end of the Cold War, nuclear proliferation is a grave and serious threat, one which rogue states and terrorist regimes would not hesitate to use against innocent civilians.

Our societal dependence on technology is increasing at an exponential rate as the rate of progress accelerates following Moore's Law. Information warfare is of mounting importance as our technological infrastructures – disorganized and unprepared for orchestrated aggression – face the threat of orchestrated attack.

And the impact of terrorism has dealt a direct blow to the foundations of free and open society. A comprehensive cure to these kinds of tragedies must serve to stem future terrorist actions at their source by addressing the root issues of poverty and societal inequality, and must grow to include a truly global sense of responsibility encompassing a concern for the welfare of those in even the most remote regions of the world.
